Vice-Rectorate team of the Vetmeduni approved by the University Council

On Friday, February 28, 2025, the new Vice Rectors of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna were unanimously appointed at a meeting of the University Council. Martina Marchetti-Deschmann will become Vice Rector for Research, Barbara Bockstahler will take over the Vice Rectorate for Teaching and Birgit Hochenegger-Stoirer will head the Vice Rectorate for Resources. Together with Matthias Gauly, who was elected as the new Rector of the Vetmeduni in July 2024, the team will start on April 15, 2025.

Matthias Gauly and his three Vice Rectors will succeed Petra Winter and her team of Otto Doblhoff-Dier, Jürgen Rehage and Manuela Raith, who have led Austria's only veterinary academic education and research institution in recent years. The term of office of the new Rectorate begins on April 15, 2025 and lasts four years.

Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Mag.a Martina Marchetti-Deschmann, Vice-Rector for Research

Martina Marchetti-Deschmann studied chemistry at the University of Vienna before moving to the Vienna University of Technology, where she completed her habilitation in 2013 and currently heads the Institute of Chemical Technologies and Analytics at the Faculty of Technical Chemistry. With over 25 years of experience in analytical chemistry, she has documented groundbreaking innovations in the field of correlative, multimodal imaging including imaging mass spectrometry in numerous publications, recorded them in patents and has been recognized internationally with awards for them. In addition to other (inter)national activities, she is Vice President of the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry (ASAC), board member of the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation (IMSF), founding member and President of the MS Imaging Society and trustee of the International Mass Spectrometry Imaging Society (IMSIS).

Priv. Doz.in Dr. Barbara Bockstahler, Vice Rector for Study Affairs

Barbara Bockstahler studied veterinary medicine in Vienna, where she initially worked independently in small animal practice after completing her studies. She has been head of the Outpatient Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Vetmeduni since 1999. Barbara Bockstahler has been a specialist veterinarian for physiotherapy and rehabilitation (Austria) since 2004 and a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner at the University of Tennessee since 2007. In her research she focused on the biomechanics of the dog and habilitated on this topic in 2009. In 2016 she became a Diplomate of the American College for Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. She is a founding member and was the first president of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Mag.a Birgit Hochenegger-Stoirer, LL.M, Vice Rector for Resources 

Birgit Hochenegger-Stoirer studied business education, business administration and business law in Scotland and Graz. Before taking on the role of Vice Rector for Finance, Law and Digitalization at the Medical University of Graz in 2020 and the Medical University of Innsbruck in 2024, she held management positions in international industrial companies for more than 20 years. At the universities, she played a leading role in the profiling process of the Medical University of Graz, intensively promoting the utilization of clinical and non-clinical data as well as the professional expansion of technology transfer and innovation structures. In addition, she was involved in university development plans and helped negotiate several performance agreements and the “Uni-Med-Impuls 2030” impulse program.

The exact names of the Vice Rectorates are yet to be determined.

I look forward to building on their successes together with my team and to further developing the Vetmeduni in research, teaching, clinical practice and administration.”
