Udder Health

Only healthy animals provide healthy food.

In addition, mastitis is one of the most common diseases in dairy herds and leads to major financial losses on farms. Maintaining animal health - here specifically udder health - is therefore the overriding goal of our livestock. The combination of veterinary-clinical expertise and analytical competence available in the milk laboratory makes an important contribution to this central task.

Farm visits

To determine and maintain udder health and to prevent mastitis. Please ask the staff of the milk laboratory for the visit and processing fee.

In the milk laboratory of the Clinic for Ruminants, more than 7000 milk samples are analyzed per year. If changes are found in a sample, the farm sending the sample is notified and, in consultation with the farm veterinarian:in, an appropriate therapy or sanitation proposal is drawn up for the affected herd.

Research work

The milk samples sent in are also basic material for our research work in the field of udder health. Among other things, new treatment options are being developed or elaborated in cooperation with pharmaceutical companies and the Austrian animal health services.

Research work

The services of the milk laboratory are integrated into an extensive network. Cooperation with associations, organizations, interest groups, veterinarians and animal health services as well as the pharmaceutical industry ensure success in terms of the overriding goal of “animal health”.

Mastitis diagnostics

In the course of the clinical examination of the patients, aseptic milk samples are taken from all lactating cows and bacteriologically examined in the clinic's own milk laboratory.

This service, which is free of charge for the animal owners, identifies the germs present and, using an antibiogram, treats them with the most suitable antibiotic.
