Size & weight: 32-35 cm, ca. 170 g

Appearance: Pinkish-brown on top and underparts, white throat and rump; distinctive blue-black wing coverts and a black beard stripe

Habitat: Inhabits diverse forests, parks, and gardens.

Song: Loud, rasping, sometimes screeching call, imitating other bird calls (e.g. buzzard)

Nest & breeding: Shallow, well-hidden nests. The female lays 3-5 eggs once a year between April and June.

Food: Insects, acorns, beechnuts as well as seeds, nuts and fruits, sometimes eggs and young of other bird species
